Handheld Bluetooth Scanner On The iPad

This is a simple guide on how to set-up the Bluetooth CHS, Series 7 Scanner on an iPad.

Enabling Bluetooth with the iPad:

Before you can connect a Bluetooth device with the iPad you will have to enable Bluetooth.
To do this, on the iPad, go into Settings >
General > Bluetooth. Once on this screen change Bluetooth so it says "On".
It will then start a search for all available Bluetooth Devices. Leave the iPad on this screen for now.

Please Note: The range of Bluetooth is relatively short (compared with other wireless types, such as Wi-Fi) so make sure that the Scanner and iPad are in close proximity with each other.

Making The CHS Scanner Available To Bluetooth:

Now that the iPad is searching for all available Bluetooth Devices, you can turn on the CHS Scanner. You may need to charge the Scanner by plugging it into the power chord first (the chord that gets plugged into the wall).

To Turn on the Scanner hold down the smaller button, on the top of the Scanner, until it makes two beeping sounds (low beep then high beep (to turn it off do the same but instead it will make a high beep and then a low beep) ). Once turned on a blue light will start flashing. If the light flashes blue once every second then it means it is searching for a Bluetooth Connection, which in this case will be your iPad. If it is flashing blue once every 3 seconds then it means it is already connected to a computer. You will need to find where it is connected and disable the connection.

Pairing The CHS Scanner With Your iPad:

With the iPad now searching for Bluetooth Devices and the Scanner now searching for available Bluetooth Connections, you can now pair the two together.
In order to do this, go back to the iPad where you should still be at the "Bluetooth" screen. You will see a device in the list called "Socket CHS" (it may take awhile for the iPad to pick up the Scanner). Select this device and select "Pair". The Scanner will make a single distinct beep noise when the iPad and the Scanner have successfully Paired/Connected.

Awesome! You can now scan barcodes into SWIM!

Current Issues:

Unfortunately, when an un-native Bluetooth Device is added to the iPad, it disables the On-screen keyboard. In this case, when the Scanner is turned on and connected to the iPad, the On-screen keyboard will no longer be available.

To get around this issue, everytime you need to use the On-screen keyboard just turn the Scanner off (by holding down the smaller button until you hear the 2 beeping nosies) and the On-screen keyboard will pop-up. When you need to Scan again you can simple turn the scanner back on, then turn it off again when you need to use the keyboard.

If you find this frustrating to do then we recommend getting a Bluetooth Keyboard, compatible with the iPad, and setting that up on the iPad. That way you will be able to use both the Scanner and a keyboard at the same time.

As of May 2013, SocketMobile have generously implemented a fix for this. A Demonstration can be found at the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhtttoC6ROs&list=UU24x77ygrF6Wb44_F52vNBA&index=17
